Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K Review And Specification

Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K Review And Specification

The Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K is expected to live up to the high standards set by its predecessor, the Acer A515-43-R19L, which held the top spot on our list of the best laptops for months. There has never been a better moment to buy for high-quality, reasonably priced laptops because everyone is working from home and kids are confined to a desk with a computer during class hours. Your hopes may grow if you notice that the laptop has either the most recent 11th Gen Intel CPUs or AMD's brand-new Ryzen chips.

Thanks to a quad-core Ryzen 3 3350U processor and a few extras, such as a quad-core backlit keyboard and a finger-print scanner for Windows Hello sign-in, Acer is providing even better performance with the Aspire A515-46-R14K.  Everything else is the same, including the slim and trim chassis, reliable productivity, and affordable price.

However, a Windows 10 laptop this cheap comes with trade-offs. There are just 4GB of RAM and a little 128GB solid-state drive in this specific casing, but battery life is much better than it was with the Aspire 5 A515-43-R19L.

You can purchase an Aspire 5 (like the Acer A515-56-50RS) with double the RAM and storage for a little bit more money, and it will run even longer without a power adapter.

Acer Aspire 5 design

Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K Design

This Core i3 version of the Aspire 5 meets the description of how almost all other laptops in Acer's Aspire 5 range feel slimmer and lighter than they actually are. Given its 14.3 by 9.9-inch size and weight of around 4 pounds, the Aspire A515-46-R14K manages to seem light.

The laptop has a sleek appearance thanks to its tapered casing and beautiful aluminum lid. When the lid is opened, a 15.6-inch display with minimal left and right bezels, an Aspire logo along the laptop hinge, and a silver chassis with a black keyboard are all visible.

The port selection is fairly good for a low-cost system, but there is at least one unexpected absence. A Gigabit ethernet port, a full HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a single USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port are all located on the left side of the device. Given the Aspire's confined 128GB solid-state drive, you'll need these USB connections to attach external storage devices.

There is a combo audio jack and a USB 2.0 Type-A port on the right side. Surprisingly, there isn't a built-in memory card reader, so you have to use a USB adaptor to access memory cards from your Android phone or digital camera.

This Acer Aspire 5's 15.6-inch display is flawless and is rated at 267 nits. Bright enough for daily productivity and leisure is the Full HD (1920 x 1080). Naturally, we've seen laptops with displays that are much brighter (around 300 nits and higher), but anything above 250 nits is excellent for a cheap machine like this. Surprisingly, while costing roughly $200 more, the Aspire 5 with a Core i5 has a much darker screen.

The display's 1080p quality, which is excellent for a screen this size, will also be a hit with you. Its outstanding viewing angles are delivered by IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology, making it simple to cooperate or share the screen with a neighbor.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K Keyboard

The Aspire 5 range from Acer boasts plush keyboards and a few unique added features at a low price. The spacious backlit keyboard of the Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K we are using for this review comes with a small 10-key numeric keypad. Each keystroke provides gratifying feedback, and typing on each feels comfortable.

However, compared to other productivity-focused laptops we've evaluated, key travel is a tad shallow. The lighting feature and the comfortable typing experience still matter a lot for a low-cost machine.

A similarly roomy trackpad is located below the keyboard. It is snappy and feels smooth, and it does a nice job of blocking accidental palm swipes while you type. However, the Aspire 5's trackpad model has a built-in fingerprint reader.

The audio quality is another aspect worth highlighting. Although a little thin, the sound quality is good for a cheap laptop, with respectable amounts of detail and bass. The Aspire 5's speakers aren't the best available, but we never set unrealistic expectations when it comes to speaker quality on a mainstream laptop priced around $1,000.

This laptop is a workhorse with a quad-core AMD Ryzen 3 3350U processor, 4GB RAM, and 128GB SSD storage that will tackle daily productivity duties and some more. All of your everyday emails, YouTube movies on the vibrant 15.6-inch screen, documents, and academic work may be handled by it. This Aspire 5 actually fills the gap between inexpensive office laptops and dorm computers because it performs admirably in both categories without charging more.

Although it has an integrated GPU, unlike siblings like the Acer Aspire 5 A515-56-50RS, which has the more recent Intel Iris Xe graphics, you can still play casual games like Minecraft and create simple movies. If you need to run recent games and mid-high media creation, the Asus FX505GT-AB73 is a solid option. However, anything above casual will be hampered by delays.

A Battery's Life

Acer estimates the 48Wh 3-cell Li-ion battery within the Ace Aspire 5 to provide 8 hours of battery life. The laptop lasts 6 hours 53 minutes while continuously browsing the web via Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, which is decent for a cheap laptop.
