Asus TUF Dash 15 (TUF516PE-AB73) Review And Specification

Asus TUF Dash 15 (TUF516PE-AB73) Review And Specification

Gaming laptops have always been significantly more expensive than the typical gaming laptop. Examples include the Asus TUF Dash 15, which offers mid-range performance in a slim and light design. It appears like you would have to spend at least two grand on a laptop if you wanted to take it around in a backpack and play the newest AAA PC games at high settings.

But this time, the Asus TUF516PE-AB73 provides a great gaming experience at a reasonable price to start, largely because of Intel's 11th-generation Tiger Lake-H35 CPUs.

However, it is not surprising that some compromises have to be made in order for this laptop to function at its low cost. The absence of a webcam must be the most evident. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 from 2020, which is still one of our favorite gaming laptops, also made this tradeoff, so this isn't the first time we've seen it in an Asus gaming laptop. It still has value today just as it did then.

The Asus TUF Dash 15 should be at the top of your short list if you've been hoping for a portable gaming laptop that can run both the newest games at high settings and doesn't cost as much as a down payment on a car.

Asus TUF Dash 15 (TUF516PE-AB73) Design

When opening the Asus TUF Dash 15, you have to do a double take to be sure it’s a TUF product and not an ROG Zephyrus. For starters, Asus’ TUF lineup of gaming laptops and accessories are aimed at a budget audience that just wants the most bang for their buck. As such, these products take a utilitarian approach in design and performance, but the TUF516PE-AB73 is a masterpiece of both.

This laptop is incredibly tiny and light for a gaming laptop, measuring only 0.8 inches thick and weighing only 4.5 lbs. Because the keyboard deck and lid are both constructed of gorgeous gray aluminum, it retains its sturdiness while being portable. Don't assume you're getting a unibody or anything; that feature is still only available on far more expensive devices. The bottom is composed of plastic.

Two USB-A ports are located on the left side of the TUF Dash 15's multitude of connectors. One more USB-A port, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, Ethernet, a 3.5mm combination jack, and a specific charging port are all located over the left. Although it now has a dedicated charging connector, you can still charge the Dash TUF using USB-C, however it will not charge as quickly.

FullHD panel and 144Hz refresh rate make the monitor important for esports, especially when combined with an RTX 3050 Ti. The screen is bright and vivid enough for single-player hits with an average peak brightness of 265 nits and an average coverage of 110% of the sRGB spectrum.

The display's bezels aren't the narrowest we've ever seen, but they're also not thick enough to interfere with your gaming. However, we are left to ponder why Asus was unable to incorporate a webcam into the top bezel. It is just the right thickness, but decreasing costs in this way would help keep the price of the Asus TUF Dash 15 in check.

Even if you don't intend to use the Dash TUF 15 for video conversations or Twitch streaming, it's unpleasant but not the end of the world. If a webcam is a necessity, you should spend your money on the best models available.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Asus TUF Dash 15 (TUF516PE-AB73) Keyboard

Overall, Asus makes nice keyboards, and the Dash TUF's keyboard isn't particularly noteworthy. Considering how slim the laptop is built, it is comfortable to type on and has plenty of key travel. The spacing between each key is good, although we wish the illumination was a little different. Its lack of RGB lighting is yet another cost-related concession. Instead, there is only teal backlighting, which isn't the most appealing hue in the world and looks more worse surrounding the clear WASD keys.

What's cool, though, is that there are a few useful dedicated keys located above the keyboard. Along with a dedicated mic mute button and a button that launches the Asus Armory Crate software, you can control volume without clumsily juggling the Fn key and the function keys.

The trackpad is satisfactory. Although the area is large enough to support gestures and the clicking mechanism is reliable, a gaming mouse is still the better option for a laptop designed for gaming.

Life of battery

Despite recent significant advancements, gaming laptops still have a reputation for having short battery lives. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which debuted in early 2020 with an RTX 2060 and an AMD Ryzen 4000 processor, stands out for having an astounding 8 hours of battery life.

The Asus TUF516PE-AB73 is even better, with a battery life of almost 10 hours, a more potent GPU, and a faster 144 GHz display. This indicates that using this gaming laptop for a full workday should not be a problem at all. Being able to transport this item to work without the charging brick is also quite advantageous when you consider how heavy the brick is.
