Design and Features

The A515-46-R3UB, like all other Aspire 5s, has the appearance of a long-lost MacBook relative. It doesn't have the same sturdy construction, exactly, but it isn't unattractive either. It is visually appealing without being unduly ostentatious because it is reasonably thin and has delicate, modest style.

Although the smooth surfaces and strong lid attachment to the chassis look fantastic when closed, high-end ultrabooks such as the Dell XPS 13 and Asus ZenBook 13 have a more appealing design. When you open the lid, the first thing you notice is the thin black bezel that encircles the screen. The whole illuminated Chiclet-style keyboard, nestled inside a silver deck above the touchpad, will then be revealed to you.

You may use your finger to lock and unlock the laptop using the fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the touchpad, which is compatible with Windows Hello. The Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R3UB, with dimensions of 14.31 x 9.86 x 0.71 inches and a weight of 3.99 pounds, is bigger and slightly heavier than the HP 15-dy2024nr (14.11 x 9.53 x 0.71 in; 3.75 pounds), but it has the same footprint as the Acer A515-43-R19L (14.31 x 9.74 x 0.71 in; 3.97 pounds).

Although there are a few exclusions, connection is respectable for a low-cost laptop. Gigabit Ethernet, full HDMI, two USB 3.0, and one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port are located on the left side. Considering that the Aspire 5 only has 128GB of storage, you will need these connections to connect your external storage devices.

The right side has a combo audio jack and an extra USB 2.0 port. Unfortunately, Acer did not include a built-in card reader, so in order to access memory cards from your smartphone or digital camera, you will need to use an adapter.

Budget laptops these days almost often have a 1080p display, and the 15.6-inch display continues that pattern. Even though the matte screen occasionally catches glare from outside light, it will do the job. Although it is quite dull on average (259 nits), it is brighter than the Asus VivoBook 15 and Lenovo Yoga C740, which have average brightness levels of 247 nits and 251 nits, respectively.

The Aspire 5 screen may be a little uncomfortable in really strong light, but the IPS screen is still suitable for working at night. More color saturation on the screen adds liveliness to otherwise lifeless surroundings. The Acer Aspire 5 is a great device for viewing movies and browsing the web, but if you plan to edit photos or create video, you may need to invest in an additional monitor with superior color reproduction.

Keyboard And Touchpad

Full-size chiclet keyboard with a number pad on the right side for easy data entry is featured on the Aspire 5. The large size of the keyboard makes it much more comfortable for little hands to use for multitasking, even though it is comfortable enough for typing. Because of its soft backlighting, which is similar to that of Apple's MacBook Pro computers, you may use it in low light.

Acer aims to match the aluminum finish of the trackpad to that of the chassis. The touchpad does not include an integrated fingerprint reader, but you may need to disable multitouch gestures because the touch-drag feature can be difficult to operate. Unexpectedly, there is a Function key that disables the trackpad—especially for extended periods of time spent typing.
