Alienware m15 R7 Review And Specification

For gaming laptops, the Alienware m15 R7 is what's needed in 2022 and beyond. While the RTX 3070 Ti is far from flawless, it does provide all the essentials for an exciting, portable gaming experience and very little that you wouldn't. No matter where you set it up, the m15 R7's potent components, elegant black chassis, and cozy keyboard will allow you to play all your favorite games, even in 4K if necessary.

The Alienware m15 R7 steps into some huge shoes left by its predecessor, the Alienware m15 R6, which we praised for its strong gaming and productivity performance and high refresh rate of 240Hz when we evaluated it last month. Fortunately, the new Alienware is well-prepared for the challenging task at hand. With a sleek 12th generation Intel processor and an RTX 3070 Ti at its core, it appears to be a well-rounded 1440p gaming machine.

The m15 R7 appears to be just as stylish as any other Alienware laptop that has been introduced recently at first sight. It has the same recessed screen hinge, a lengthy ring of RGB lighting at the back edge, and the recognizable alien-head emblem illuminated in bright blue on the lid as well. We can't blame Dell for sticking with this tried-and-true design that has stood the test of time—after all, if it ain't busted yet, ain't no fix yet.

To be honest, there are a few things the M15 R7 should have done better. The large, heavy power adaptor is the killer blow, but the fan is also somewhat noisy by default and the chassis isn't the most portable. The Alienware m15 R7 is less enticing for gamers who are often on the go because of its poor battery life, which means you'll need to bring this brick along with the laptop.

Overall though, all this laptop has to offer will impress you. Given that the cutting-edge hardware should last you a long time, this laptop is unquestionably one of the best Windows gaming laptops you can get if you have the extra cash to spend on it. It's also one of the greatest laptops for engineering students because of its strong components.

As previously said, there hasn't been much of a change to the Alienware m15 R7's general design. A massive "15" engraving that takes up a larger portion of the lid, a hexagon-patterned grille for the speakers and intake above the keyboard, and the Alienware logo lighted on the back of the screen are all still present, as is another one that serves as the power button. We can't ask for more, but the chassis is built of plastic and still looks excellent and is robust enough to last for a few more years.

We may conclude that the 15.6-inch screen, with its 240Hz refresh rate, is a strong screen overall. Although it may not be the best color reproduction we've seen on a gaming laptop, it still has a great maximum brightness and is incredibly clear and vibrant. If you're more concerned with a higher refresh rate, there is a 1080p version available on some SKUs with a 360Hz refresh rate.

Like many Alienware gaming laptops, this one has a decent keyboard with plenty of travel (around 1.8mm) on the keys, so mistypes are rare and you can type comfortably. As expected given the plastic design, the keyboard has a very slight amount of flex, only evident when you press extremely strongly on the central keys. Although the trackpad is small, it is incredibly responsive, and you will probably still need a mouse to play games.

The m15 R7 features three USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a headphone jack, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, and a Thunderbolt 4 port for physical connectivity. In addition, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 are integrated, which is a new requirement for gaming laptops these days.

A Battery's Life

While gaming laptops such as the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 have demonstrated longer battery lives—well over eight hours—the Alienware m15 R7 continues to have a very short battery life. With all of the fancy RGB lighting turned off to save power, the 89Whr battery that comes with it lasts slightly over three hours in tests.

Apart from games, video playback performs slightly better, nearly reaching four hours. This means that, if you start with a full charge, you should be able to watch a movie without the need to plug in. However, you won't likely get more than two hours of gaming with all the eye candy before you need to plug in that bulky AC adapter. While many gaming laptops are similar, there have also been others that are better.
