Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533ZW-AS94 Review And Specification

Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533ZW-AS94 Review And Specification

Gaming laptops, such as the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (2022), are now on par with their desktop counterparts in speed, offering the same raw power to run the most demanding PC games and productivity applications without stuttering. Moreover, they provide the added mobility that the modern world requires.

The Razer Blade Stealth is the ultimate portable device; our review model, the G533ZW-AS94, isn't quite there. With devices like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15, which boasts an incredibly thin design, strong components, including the flagship RTX 3080 graphics card, and exceptional gaming capability, it is pretty thick and its hefty chassis could use some losing.

Nevertheless, it's a powerful gaming laptop that performs admirably. For instance, the Intel flagship Core i9 12900H, Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti, and 16GB of RAM that come with our review model are more than sufficient for the majority of AAA titles. And that alone is garnering it a lot of praise.

The stunning 1080p screen with a powerful 300Hz refresh rate, along with other gamer-focused features like immersive, highly customizable RGB lighting and the availability of customizable settings, are what will really make the ROG Strix Scar 15 a powerful gaming laptop that is well worth the investment.

As long as you have the money to spend—the Strix G533ZW-AS94 starts at just over two grand—that is.

The newest gaming laptop on the market, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15, isn't the most elegant. It's large and bulky, measuring 13.94 x 10.2 x 1.07 inches and weighing 5.07 pounds; therefore, it's more of a desktop replacement than a laptop you can throw in your backpack and bring on your daily commute.

Only the lid is covered in a stylish metallic finish; the majority of its construction is plastic. But it does look lot better, and to be fair, the keyboard deck's lid's silken smooth finish looks fantastic, and the whole thing is made with excellent build quality.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533ZW-AS94 Keyboard

The keyboard and chassis of the ROG Strix gaming laptops feature all the RGB glitz and glamour, including per-key customisation and an LED RGB light bar that runs the whole length of the laptop's front edge. Additionally, a brief RGB strip that breathes down on the laptop's back vents is emblazoned into the underside of the display.

But the lights are just the beginning. With the ideal amount of travel, pleasant feedback with every keystroke, and a practical layout, the keyboard is excellent for both typing and gaming. It employs Asus' optical mechanical switches for that distinct, precise feel.

Asus chose not to use the 15.6-inch chassis for a separate number pad elsewhere, but you'll love the extra space this decision creates. In addition to being roomy, the touchpad feels smooth and sensitive to touches.

There are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports on the left edge, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with Thunderbolt 2 at the back, and one additional USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port. The connectivity is decent. Additionally, there is a DC power input for the laptop, one HDMI 2.1 port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E are provided by the 2x2 Intel AX201 card, which is used for wireless communications.

I'm okay with Asus omitting the webcam and fingerprint reader from its ROG Strix notebooks. The majority of built-in webcams are just OK, and you can always use the camera on your phone to record video calls.

We evaluated the Strix G15 with a 300Hz, 1080p display earlier in 2021. However, Asus has now switched to a 300Hz, 2,560 x 1,440 resolution screen in the latest model for 2022. You're getting the best of both worlds with this resolution, refresh rate, and screen size: an incredibly high-resolution screen that you can use for work and daily tasks, a high enough refresh rate to operate the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU, and exceptional color performance for creative professionals.

Although this screen boasts a 928:1 contrast ratio and a peak brightness of 357cd/m2, the color display is what really stands out in this case. With the screen adjusted to the DCI-P3 color space, an astounding 97.5% of that gamut is reproduced. In that color space, it's also very accurate in terms of color, with an amazing average Delta E of 0.54.

The display may need to be calibrated if you must work in a color space other than DCI-P3, but otherwise, it's a good screen for gaming and viewing movies.

A Battery's Life

The battery life of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 isn't very noteworthy. It doesn't last longer than two hours and forty-five minutes, as is normal with most gaming laptops, so you'll need to be close to a power source. Other gaming laptops, like the Asus TUF A15, have excellent battery life—up to 12.5 hours, to be exact.
