Asus TUF Dash 15 FX517ZM-AS73 Review And Specification

Traditionally, gaming laptops have been significantly more expensive than your average traditional gaming portable. However, there are some models that offer mid-range performance in thin and light profiles, such the Asus TUF Dash 15 FX517ZM-AS73. You were probably going to have to shell out a few grand for a gaming laptop if you ever wanted one that could run the newest AAA games at maximum settings and fit into your backpack.

But this time, the Dash 15 FX517ZM-AS73 offers a premium gaming experience at a very reasonable starting price, largely due to Intel's new 12th generation Alder Lake processors.

It's crucial to remember that the FX517ZM-AS73's lightweight design means it won't likely be the most powerful RTX 3060 gaming laptop available, but it still has enough power to run everything at consistent framerates.

When we evaluated the Asus TUF Dash 15 (TUF516PE-AB73) last year, we found it to be quite portable and had good gaming performance thanks to its 11th generation graphics card, the RTX 3050Ti. Thanks to a more recent 12th generation CPU and RTX 3060, Asus now provides even higher performance for 2022, and it doesn't cost as much as a car down payment.

The new Asus TUF Dash 15 ought to be at the top of your list if all you've been waiting for is a powerful gaming laptop that can run the newest AAA games at high settings without breaking the bank.

Design

You have to check to make sure the Asus TUF Dash 15 FX517ZM-AS73 is a TUF device and not a ROG Zephyrus when you open it. First off, those on a tight budget who just want the most value for their money are the target market for Asus' TUF range of gaming laptops and accessories. Because of this, the design and functionality of these goods are utilitarian, but the FX517ZM-AS73 is a masterwork in both areas.

This laptop is incredibly light and small for a gaming laptop—it weighs only 4.5 pounds and is only 0.8 inches thick. Because the keyboard deck and lid are composed of gorgeous gray-colored aluminum, they maintain their rigidity even after being packed into a smaller space. Don't expect a unibody or anything similar because the bottom is made of plastic; those are still reserved for far more expensive gadgets.

Display

With a frame rate of 144 Hz, the display is a huge deal for esports, especially when combined with an RTX 3060. The screen's average peak brightness of 265 nits, which corresponds to 110% of the sRGB spectrum, makes it sufficiently bright and colorful for single-player games.

Although not the narrowest we've seen, the bezels around the display are undoubtedly not thick enough to interfere with your gaming. We're happy that Asus has at last included the webcam that was absent from its earlier models.

Numerous connectors are hidden beneath the surface of the TUF Dash 15, including two USB-A connections on the left side. One additional USB-A port, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, Ethernet, a 3.5mm combo jack, and a dedicated charging connector are located over the left. Although the Dash TUF has a dedicated charging connector, USB-C charging is still an option, albeit at a slower rate.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Overall, Asus makes decent keyboards, and the Dash TUF's keyboard isn't very good. Considering the laptop's tiny design, the keyboard is comfortable to type on and has ample of travel. Though we would prefer a little different lighting setup, the individual keys are arranged well. Another cost-cutting measure is the lack of RGB lighting. Rather, all you got is teal illumination, which isn't the most appealing hue in the world and looks especially bad around the obvious WASD keys.

The fact that there are some functionally usable dedicated keys above the keyboard is neat, though. Along with a dedicated mic mute button and an Asus Armoury Crate software opening button, you can manage volume without uncomfortably straddling the Fn and function keys.

The trackpad is working well. Although the clicking mechanism is robust and the laptop is large enough to perform gestures, you should really use a gaming mouse instead of a laptop for gaming.

A Battery's Life

Although there have been some noticeable advancements recently, gaming laptops still have a problem with short battery lives. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which debuted in early 2020 and included an AMD Ryzen 4000 processor and an RTX 2060, was most notable for its astounding 8 hours of battery life.

With a faster 144GHz display, an even more potent GPU, and over 10 hours of battery life, the Asus FX517ZM-AS73 is superior. This implies that you should have no trouble using this gaming laptop to get through an entire workday. Being able to charge this device without the charging brick is a major bonus, especially considering how heavy the brick is.
