ASUS TUF Dash FX516PM Review And Specification

ASUS TUF Dash FX516PM Review And Specification

Traditionally, gaming laptops have been substantially more expensive than your typical gaming portable. However, the Asus TUF Dash FX516PM packs mid-range performance in a thin and light design. In the past, if you wanted a gaming laptop that could comfortably fit in your backpack and run the newest AAA PC games at high settings, you were looking at spending a several thousand dollars on it.

However, this year's Asus TUF Dash packs a sumptuous gaming experience at a very competitive price point, in large part because of Intel's latest 11th-generation Tiger Lake-H35 CPUs.

To make this laptop function at such low price, though, Asus had to make a few adjustments. The absence of a webcam will be the most obvious. The Asus TUF Dash 15 (TUF516PE-AB73) from 2021, which is still one of our favorite gaming laptops, also made this sacrifice. So this isn't the first time we've seen it in an Asus gaming laptop. It was a fantastic laptop back then, and it remains such today.

The TUF Dash FX516PM is more than capable of running contemporary games at a respectable framerate, but it won't likely be the most powerful RTX 3060-powered gaming laptop on the market, in part due to its lightweight design.

Design

ASUS TUF Dash FX516PM Design

The Asus TUF Dash 15 is available in black or white, and after seeing both, we think the black model (which we're reviewing) looks insanely stylish. You have to double check that the Asus TUF Dash 15 is a TUF product and not a ROG Zephyrus when you open it.

To begin with, Asus' TUF series of gaming laptops and peripherals is targeted at consumers on a budget who just want the best value possible. As a result, the performance and design of these items are utilitarian, yet the Dash FX516PM is a masterpiece in both categories.

This laptop is incredibly tiny and light for a gaming laptop at just 9.1 cm thick and 2 kg in weight. Because the keyboard deck and lid are both constructed of gorgeous gray aluminum, it retains its sturdiness while being portable. Don't assume you're getting a unibody or anything; that feature is still only available on far more expensive devices. The bottom is composed of plastic.

Two USB-A ports are located on the left side of the TUF Dash 15's multitude of connectors. One more USB-A port, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, Ethernet, a 3.5mm combination jack, and a specific charging port are all located over the left. Although it now has a dedicated charging connector, you can still charge the Dash TUF using USB-C, however it will not charge as quickly.

Display

Full HD panel and 144 Hz refresh rate make the monitor important for esports, especially when combined with an RTX 3060 GPU. The screen is bright and vivid enough for single-player hits with an average peak brightness of 265 nits and an average coverage of 110% of the sRGB spectrum.

The display's bezels aren't the narrowest we've ever seen, but they're also not thick enough to interfere with your gaming. However, we are left to ponder why Asus was unable to incorporate a webcam into the top bezel. It is just the right thickness, but decreasing costs in this way would help keep the price of the Asus TUF Dash 15 in check.

Even while a missing webcam is irritating, you can live without it if you don't intend to use the Dash TUF 15 for video calls or Twitch broadcasting. If a webcam is a necessity, you should spend your money on the best models available.

Keyboard & Touchpad

ASUS TUF Dash FX516PM Keyboard

particularly noteworthy. Considering how slim the laptop is built, it is comfortable to type on and has plenty of key travel. Well-spaced individual keys and 4-zone RGB keyboard backlighting are also features. Given that comparable laptops lack RGB illumination on the keyboards, this is a benefit at this pricing.

Above the keyboard, there are a few specific keys that are quite helpful. Along with a dedicated mic mute button and a button that launches the Asus Armory Crate software, you can control volume without clumsily juggling the Fn key and the function keys.

The trackpad is satisfactory. Although the area is large enough to support gestures and the clicking mechanism is reliable, a gaming mouse is still the better option for a laptop designed for gaming.

A Battery's Life

Though there have been noticeable advances recently, gaming laptops have a history of having poor battery life. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which debuted in early 2021 with an AMD Ryzen 7 processor and an RTX 2060, stands out for its impressive 8 hours of battery life.

Even better is the Asus Dash FX516PM, which has a battery life of almost 10 hours, a more potent GPU, and a quicker 144 GHz display. This implies that you shouldn't have any trouble using this gaming laptop for a full workday. Being able to transport this item to work without the charging brick is also a significant plus when you consider how heavy the brick is.
