Asus TUF Gaming F15 (FX507ZM-ES74) Review And Specification

When your budget doesn't allow for a high-end gaming laptop like the Razer Blade 15 or the ROG Strix Scar 15, the best option is to acquire a gaming laptop like the Asus TUF Gaming F15, which packs intermediate performance in thin and light chassis. Nevertheless, this mid-range gaming laptop has the power to smoothly run the newest AAA games at 1080p thanks to its 12th generation Intel Core i7-12700H processor and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card.

It doesn't necessarily mean, though, that the webcam, touchpad, and audio are flawless just because it has strong hardware. Despite the plethora of mid-range options available, the Asus TUF Gaming F15 continues to be one of the better options for unrestricted 1080p gaming.

The TUF Gaming F15 is capable of competing with some of the greatest gaming laptops available due to its productivity capabilities in addition to its gaming skills.

A Sleek, New Design for the TUF

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 has a sleek, dark grey style that was purposefully chosen to make a laptop that would look good in both formal and informal settings. In contrast to other gaming laptops, the lid of this version of the Gaming F15 features less decorative elements, including a streamlined design with a TUF shield in the center.

The is similar in size to the MSI Pulse GL66, which measures 14.13 x 1.20 x 0.94 inches and weighs 4.63 pounds, and the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15, which measures 13.94 x 10.2 x 1.07 pounds and weighs 5.07 pounds. It measures 13.94 x 9.88 x 0.98 inches and weighs 4.85 pounds.

When the lid is lifted, a notch in the top bezel contains the 720p webcam, which was absent from the device's predecessor from the previous year. A power adapter, an Ethernet connector, an HDMI 2.0 port, a USB 3.2 Type-A port, a 3.5mm jack, a USB 3.2 Type-C port, and a Thunderbolt 4 port are located on the left side of the laptop. There is only one USB 3.2 Type-A port on the right side.

New Intel Silicones in Nvidia RTX 3060

Our review model, the Asus TUF Gaming F15 (FX507ZM-ES74 model), has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU and an Intel Core i7-12700H processor. The core of the Gaming F15's robust 1080p gaming performance is its GPU, which features 6GB of GDDR6 and a maximum graphics power of 140W. Acer's AN517-54-79L1 (RTX 3050 Ti, 4GB) and Acer's predator Helios 300 PH315-54-760S (RTX 3060, 6GB) are competitors.

Everything works smoothly and it maintains a respectable 56 frames per second on Hitman 3 (extreme settings, 1080p), which is comparable to competitive laptops equipped with the RTX 3060 graphics card.

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 averages 76 frames per second on the most demanding settings (1080p) on the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark. Acer Predator Helios 300 (RTX 3060) and Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15 with RTX 3070 Ti topped out at 93 fps and 73 fps, respectively, while the MSI Pulse GL66 (RTX 3060) managed 68 fps.

Based on the GA106 Ampere chip, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card is a faster version of the RTX 3050 Ti mobile card. This GPU has more Tensor and Ray Tracing cores and 3840 CUDA. As such, it's unlikely that you'll find a better price than this Gaming F15 if you're searching for an affordable method to get started with Ray-Tracing and DLSS.

The RTX 3060 here effortlessly carries along the second-generation application of its ray-tracing technology, as it is based on Nvidia's Ampere architecture. Additionally, this greatly improves performance in games that support it. Without ray tracing, Metro Exodus, for example, averaged 59 frames per second at Ultra settings. When enabled, it shoots at 68 frames per second with Nvidia's DLSS technology.

Although it's obviously not the perfect 60 frames per second that you may be expecting for, it's still playable at Ultra settings. We call it a win since you can get that performance in a computer that fits neatly in your backpack.

Among the first machines to come with an Intel i7-12700H Alder Lake CPU is the FX507ZM-ES74, which makes it stand out. These chips, which have a TDP of 35W to 45W, were created especially for ultraportable laptops and were first announced in January. This review's Asus TUF Faming F15 model has a 12th generation CPU, 16GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM, and a 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD.

That alone is sufficient to operate up to 17 Google Chrome tabs, with one of them serving as a streaming device for Spotify, TV shows, and the Epic Games launcher. For a brief period, the final tab will cause the fans to roar, but not loudly enough to drown out the music.

Peaking at 300 Hz

With a frame rate of 300 Hz and a 15-inch Full HD 1920 x 1080 display, this display is a huge thing for esports, especially when combined with an RTX 3060. The screen's average peak brightness of 324 nits, which corresponds to 110% of the sRGB spectrum, makes it sufficiently bright and colorful for single-player games.

Although not the narrowest we've seen, the bezels around the display are undoubtedly not thick enough to interfere with your gaming. We're happy that Asus has at last included the webcam that was absent from its earlier models.

Overall, Asus makes decent keyboards, and the Gaming F15's keyboard isn't really good. Considering the laptop's tiny design, the keyboard is comfortable to type on and has ample of travel. Though we would prefer a little different lighting setup, the individual keys are arranged well.

Another cost-cutting measure is the lack of RGB lighting. Rather, all you got is teal illumination, which isn't the most appealing hue in the world and looks especially bad around the obvious WASD keys.

The trackpad is working well. Although the clicking mechanism is robust and the laptop is large enough to perform gestures, you should really use a gaming mouse instead of a laptop for gaming.

Best Gaming Laptop Battery Life

Although there have been some noticeable advancements recently, gaming laptops still have a problem with short battery lives. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which debuted in early 2020 and included an AMD Ryzen 4000 processor and an RTX 2060, was most notable for its astounding 8 hours of battery life.

Better further, the Asus FX507ZM-ES74 has a faster 300GHz display, an even more potent GPU, and nearly 10 hours of battery life. This implies that you should have no trouble using this gaming laptop to get through an entire workday. Being able to charge this device without the charging brick is a major bonus, especially considering how heavy the brick is.
