Design and Features: Aesthetic Brilliance

Asus has undergone a comprehensive redesign of the ROG Strix G16 chassis to accommodate its larger screen, resulting in a visually stunning device. The laptop features an aluminum lid and a high-quality plastic body with a satin-like sheen, demonstrating attention to detail and a premium feel. Despite the plastic composition, there's a notable absence of the typical "cheap" plastic found in budget laptops.

While the ROG Strix series is known for its extravagant RGB lighting, the newer models, including the G614JV-AS73, adopt a more modest approach. The laptop incorporates a thin "peeping-glow" LED strip along the front edge, wrapping around to the sides, and per-key lighting on the keyboard. Users can customize each key using the Aura Sync within the Asus Armoury Crate software.

The keyboard remains consistent with other ROG Strix models, but Asus introduces five programmable hotkeys at the top (M1 through M5). These keys handle functions like volume control, microphone on/off, and quick access to the Armoury Crate by default. Surprisingly, despite the ample space, the ROG G614JV-AS73 omits a number pad from its keyboard layout.

In terms of port selection, the laptop offers two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports on the right side. On the left side, there's a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C port, a GbE port, HDMI 2.1 port, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a barrel-style charging port. The laptop features large vents along both sides and the rear to efficiently dissipate heat generated by the powerful Core i9-13980HX and GeForce RTX 4070 components.

Measuring 13.94 x 0.89 x 10.39 inches and weighing 5.51 pounds, the ROG Strix G16 strikes a balance between portability and performance. Comparatively, it is lighter than the Gigabyte Aorus 15X (5.73 pounds) and slightly heavier than the HP Omen 16 (5.2 pounds). The Razer Blade 15 remains the most portable in this category at 4.4 pounds.
