Asus TUF Gaming F15 FX506HF-ES51 Review And Specification

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 has been a stalwart in the gaming laptop arena for several years, consistently undergoing refinements and updates. In our evaluation of last year's model (TUF FA507RM-ES73), we commended its commendable 1080p gaming performance and a vibrant 300Hz screen. True to Asus's commitment to improvement, the 2023 iteration boasts faster components, more ambitious graphics options, and a lighter chassis compared to its predecessor.

Priced a little over $1000, the FA507NU-DS74 model positions itself as a compelling choice for users seeking a versatile machine catering to both gaming and productivity needs. Notably, Asus offers an RTX 4060 as an option, further enhancing the gaming potential of this midrange powerhouse.

Amidst a competitive midrange market, the Asus TUF Gaming A15 2023 aims to stand out against rivals such as the Lenovo Legion 5 and Acer Nitro 5. With an emphasis on improved performance and thoughtful design refinements, let's delve into whether this gaming laptop can outpace its counterparts and deliver a satisfying user experience.

 Design & Build

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 2023 maintains the signature military-inspired design of the TUF range, featuring a molded lid that exudes durability. The utilitarian air vents and TUF logos contribute to its rugged aesthetics, though opinions may vary on its maturity.

On the left side, the laptop hosts most of its physical connectivity ports. Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports, one with DisplayPort support, share space with a full-size USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI output, and audio and Ethernet jacks. While the connectivity is decent, a preference for faster USB ports might be expressed. Internally, the laptop incorporates dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, complemented by a basic 720p webcam. Notably absent are a fingerprint reader and card reader.

With its 15.6-inch form factor, the FA507NU-DS74 includes a number pad on the keyboard, known for its fast response and quiet buttons—suitable for eSports gaming, although users may find the keys wobbly and the underlying plastic soft, lacking the expected sturdiness for its price. The key layout could benefit from improvements, featuring small cursor keys and a single-height Return button. Despite offering RGB LEDs, customization options are limited with single-zone lighting.

Beneath the keyboard, a touchpad of sufficient size is present, but its soft and uneven buttons may leave users wanting. Casual gamers might find a USB gaming mouse to be a more suitable choice.

Display

The 15.6-inch IPS display of the TUF Gaming A15 2023 boasts a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a commendable 144Hz refresh rate, although slightly lower than its predecessor's 300Hz. The display's peak brightness of 250 nits delivers depth and punch, with a well-saturated and accurate color range thanks to a decent contrast ratio. Featuring 72% NTSC coverage and a 3ms response time, the display caters to both gaming and productivity tasks.

The midrange gaming machine's display specifications, including impressive color quality and gamut coverage, outshine competitors such as the Acer Nitro 5. Despite the 250 nits peak brightness being suitable for indoor use, it may fall short for outdoor scenarios. However, the 144Hz refresh rate compensates for eSports enthusiasts, exceeding mainstream competition requirements.

The laptop's speakers surprise with ample bass and volume, albeit with a somewhat tinny top end. While acceptable as a default choice, users might prefer a headset for an enhanced audio experience.
